Getting a tattoo is a big deal, whether it’s your first one or your 50th one. Many people get tattoos to commemorate an event, object, or person in their life. The last thing you want is to feel regret as soon as you walk out of the tattoo shop because the image on your skin didn’t turn out quite the way you had imagined it would look in your head.

Tattoos are one of the few remaining permanent things in our lives. While tattoo removal is an option, it’s not exactly easy (or cheap). It’s far better to do a little more research ahead of time to make sure you love how your new tattoo will look on your body.

Enter the Inkhunter app.

How the Inkhunter App Works

Fortunately, now there’s an app that will let you “try on” a tattoo before you commit. The free app Inkhunter enables you to virtually try on a tattoo to see how the design looks on your skin. Choose one of their images to download or upload your own to their augmented reality (AR) platform.

Once the image is uploaded, you can have some fun! The app asks you to draw a square smile on your body wherever you want the tattoo to appear to go into AR mode. Don’t worry—minimal art skills are absolutely OK for this step. You just need to be able to draw three lines.

If you’re feeling hesitant about drawing a few lines on your body, you can skip AR mode. (You might also question whether a tattoo is really in the cards for you).

If you opt-out of AR mode, the image will appear on your body, and you can take a picture of it using your phone’s camera. Try different angles, colors, and sizes until you figure out the design you love.

Getting a Tattoo Is A Little Less Scary

Inkhunter is extremely useful for anyone considering getting a tattoo. It’s also useful for tattoo artists who want to be sure their clients are comfortable with how their tattoo will look when it’s complete. Tattoo artists can use the Inkhunter app to test out different colors and locations of an image before they begin the process of inking the tattoo.

This app can also be helpful for anyone using original art for their tattoo. You can make sure your placement is perfect and that everything lines up how it’s supposed to once it is transposed onto your body.

While Inkhunter offers a pretty cool way for people to test out a tattoo before committing to one, we’re still holding out for an app that will take away the pain of getting inked. At least with Inkhunter, you can avoid the pain of getting your tattoo removed or having to redo parts of it that don’t look the way you expected.
